Obituary for Cora L. Mollen

Cora L. Mollen, of St Germain, Wisconsin, passed away on August 4, 2019, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born to Harvey and Marguerite (Prunty) Arndt, June 9, 1934, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She graduated from Divine Savior High School in 1952, and then entered the religious order of the Sisters of the Divine Savior. She completed her MA in English from Marquette University. As a nun, Cora lived in Rome, Italy, from 1959-1962, at the Sisters Motherhouse for the Sisters of the Divine Savior. While in Italy, she studied theology at the Regina Mundi International Institute. In 1968, she left the order and worked as a school teacher in the Milwaukee Public School System. She married Roy C. Mollen on June 10, 1971, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They moved to St Germain in 1973, inspired to purchase their home because of the beautiful St Germain River in the backyard. They raised their two children there and remained there through the rest of their years.

Cora was a self-taught naturalist, who helped to establish the Awassa Trails in St Germain, in 1995, while she worked for Wisconsin Public Service. She was a skilled mycologist and co-authored a book on mushrooms called “Fascinating Fungi of the Northwoods”. She founded the Northstate Mycological Club in 1996, and was its coordinator 23 years. Cora regularly lead nature hikes and was active in educating people of all ages about the natural world. She was also a member of the Sayner-St Germain Fish and Wildlife Club, the Friends of the Plum Lake Library, and the Plum Lake Library Book Club.

She was a prolific poet and also enjoyed both watercolor painting and drawing. Other interests included hiking, reading, nature study and canoeing, especially along the St Germain River. Probably her favorite pastime of all was playing and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by two children: David (Sara) Mollen and Anne (Scott) Small, both of St Germain; a brother: Murray (Francis) Arndt; sister: Terrie (Ralph) Bormet; and 3 grandchildren, Cora A. Mollen, Ayla M. Mollen, and Murray R. Small.

The family will be holding a private remembrance. Cora asked that any memorials go to children’s books and programing at the Plum Lake Public Library. If you are interested in making a donation, please make check payable to Plum Lake Public Library, specify in the memo line "in memory of Cora Mollen", and mail to PO Box 229; Sayner, WI 54560.
