Obituary for Leonard N. Nysted

Leonard N. Nysted, 92, passed away as he lived, peacefully and quietly, in his home in Eagle River, WI. His daughter, LynnAnn Thomas and son in law, David Thomas (Sugar Camp, WI) were with him. His son Lee A. Nysted (of Lake Bluff, IL) had been there for a visit days before.

Len was born in Marshfield, WI in 1927 and grew up in Loyal, WI. He flew planes in the Army Air-corps before attending St. Olaf College where he attained his BS in chemistry.

Len was a world renowned chemist from the 50s thru 80s. He contributed so much to the world in the way of naturally derived medications. His work with G.D. Searle brought the first oral contraceptives. He worked with the Native Americans of Central America to derive the compounds that were discovered to be treatment for rheumatoid arthritis and anovulation (birth control). One of three reagents know currently bears his name, Nysted Reagent.

He was a lifetime lover of the WI Northwoods. He and his wife, Anita (who passed away 2 yrs ago) LynnAnn and Lee were summertime residents starting in 1958 to present. Len’s beloved A-frame on Lake Laura near Star Lake was his pride and joy. Len and Anita moved permanently to Eagle River 5 years ago.

He is survived by his two children, 5 grandchildren: Lyle B. Williams, III of Belgrade MT, Leonard Bradley Williams of Seattle WA, Krystel Nysted of Olympia WA, Melissa Nysted of Denver CO, Jessica Nysted of Lake Bluff IL. Great grandchildren: Simon Nysted of Olympia and Dean Leonard Williams of Belgrade MT. He also is survived by his two youngest sisters, Mary and Jeanne of Birchwood, WI.
