Obituary for Mary T Johnston

Mary T. Johnston, age 76, a resident of St. Germain, WI for over 40 years, was called home to the arms of our Lord, unexpectedly on Thursday November 14, 2019 at St Clare’s Hospital completely surrounded by her beloved husband, Ed, her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and brothers and sister.

She was born April 10, 1943 in Chicago, IL to late Anton and Mary Hain. She was the oldest of 7 children and attended St. Ita’s Catholic School until graduating in High School in 1961.

She married the love of her life, Edward J. Johnston on June 17, 1961. They lived and raised their four children in Glenview, IL, until 1977, until they fulfilled their life-long dream of owning a resort and living in St. Germain, WI, since June 19, 1977 and bought Pinehurst Resort.

Mary was a very active member serving the town of St. Germain from the moment her and her family moved there. She served many terms of President of the Chamber of Commerce as well as Secretary, Vice-President, Committee Chair for Monday Night Bingo, and Chairman of Colorama. During her lifetime in St. Germain, if there was a position or Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, she held each of those position and many for 2-4 terms.

She also was an extremely proud and passionate member of the St. Germain Lioness Club since 2003. Holding the office of President for many terms and secretary. She was a leader of recruiting new members, a weekly server and baker of food served every Monday at the St. Germain Flee Market, which all monies raised went to help the main focus of the Lioness Club, of helping children who have lost their sight, donating funds right back into the St. Germain Community for anything from new soccer nets at the field to numerous educational scholarships to the youths in our entire Northwoods area. Mary was so passionate about the main purpose of the entire Lioness Club’s mission, which was helping blind children, that she founded and started the vision testing programs with all local schools to offer members coming into each school and conducting preliminary vision screenings to help catch any early signs of any weakness to a child’s eyes from one year to the next so the families could be notified prior to any more vision loss occurring and treatment started soon. She was recognized and received an award for founding, starting, organizing with all schools staff and fellow member to conduct these screens, by the Head Department of the State of WI Lioness.

She was also an active member of her church, St. Mary’s in Sayner, WI and had served for many years on the altar society and become a Eucharistic Minister, as well as many years as a children’s C.C.D. teacher.

Her loving and compassionate nature made her a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to so many.

She is preceded in death by her parents Anton and Mary Hain (Hufnagel), and their unborn son, Steven all of Chicago, IL.

Mary is survived by her loving husband of 58 years: Edward J. Johnston; her children: Marie Johnston of Richland, WA, Cory Johnston-Newton (Kelly) of St. Germain, WI, son Edward J. Johnston (Sheila) of Sayner, WI, Beth Tienhaara (Wade) of Eagle River, WI; her 9 grandchildren: Eric, Jasmine, Brittany, Laura, Lucas, Samantha, Celest, MaryBeth, Grace; along with 5 great grandchildren.
